It's that time again, where I choose to unleash my opinions about the worst and best films to have come out of 2024. Starting with the bottom ten. There have not been too many films to right home about this year, but just a lot of 'meh' and disappointment, but I am hoping to crack some funny lines out some of them at least.

  1. Mother's Instinct

For about two thirds, Mother’s Instinct was shaping up to be a pretty good psychological thriller, made by two acting giants, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain, but it completely butchers its ending with an unconvincing twist that robs the story of any interesting tension and deeper ideas. It traded Hitchcock for just being a an empty tv movie.

Richard Curtis’ Love Actually for children, not as funny or even corny enough, with the most unrelatable kids put to film, but it’s a big win for Suffolk.

Adam Sandler moans in space with a giant spider, how I would have loved this to have worked, yet Sandler is not really the right choice for existential contemplation.

How could a Pedro Almodóvar film starring Tilda Swinton and Julianna Moore be so wooden and bland? Nice music though.

To be honest I had much more fun with Megalopolis than a lot of other films this year, and I am certain that it has secured a future of being celebrated with cinephiles for decades as they gather at their local cult theatre to watch, laugh, and get high and drunk as they bask at Francis Ford Coppola’s hilarious mess. Half of Coppola’s winery went into funding this dream project of his, while it certainly delivers on the ambitious and unexpected, the only problem is it’s like being the only sober person at a party full of hippies and Francis is telling you the secrets of universe, but you can’t understand any of it because you’re not as stoned as he is

Ridley Scott will always be one of the most influential directors of all time, but the guy is 87 now and can’t seem to make a memorable movie anymore. Revisiting the world of his last great sword and sandals epic Gladiator (2000), finds him doing the same old tired stuff with no heart or soul, with a plot too lost under the shadow of its elder, it doesn’t matter how many swords, ships, monkeys or sharks your throw at us Scott, you need to tell a half decent story. By the way how on earth did they get those sharks in the Colosseum?

This folk drama from Athina Rachel Tsangari teases to be freaky trip possibly slipping into the territory of Midsommar or Robert Eggers The Witch, but ends up being a dull uneventful slog. Caleb Landry Jones and most of the cast look bored and unfortunately that’s how I felt.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been dead for along time, and inviting the fourth wall breaking crassness of Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool is the solution, is it? Deadpool and Wolverine represents everything wrong with big franchise movies these days. They have lost all integrity to their characters and story and will pay as many stars as possible to make meaningless cameos for 5 minutes just so the fans and nerds can feel excited for a millisecond. They are laughing at their own mess and expecting us to pay and laugh with them, which wouldn’t be that bad if this was the last thing Marvel ever did, but Feige insists on unleashing more of this garbage on us for the rest of eternity. If more of this vein cash grabbing self-loathing junk is what lies ahead, then this is the death of art itself.
